Ingredients

Scale
  1. 6 slices of thick Texas toast or any thick-cut white bread

  2. 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

  3. 1 teaspoon garlic powder or 2 cloves minced fresh garlic

  4. 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  5. ½ teaspoon dried parsley (optional for garnish and flavor)

  6. 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  7. 6 slices provolone cheese

  8. 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

  9. Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Optional Protein Topping (No Pork Version)

  • 1 cup cooked and shredded chicken breast

  • or ½ cup seasoned ground beef, drained of excess oil

Preparation Notes

  • Use room temperature butter so it spreads smoothly.

  • Fresh garlic offers a stronger kick than garlic powder. Choose based on your taste preference.

  • You can use pre-shredded cheese for convenience, but shredding it yourself offers better melt quality.

  • If you’re using fresh bread, consider toasting it lightly beforehand so it holds up better with the toppings.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare the garlic butter
    • In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, garlic powder (or fresh garlic), oregano, dried parsley (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper.
    • Stir until everything is evenly combined into a smooth spread.
  3. Lay out the bread slices
    • Arrange the Texas toast slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
    • Make sure the slices don’t overlap so they crisp evenly in the oven.
  4. Spread the butter mixture
    • Use a butter knife or spatula to generously spread the garlic butter over one side of each slice.
    • Cover all corners so every bite is full of flavor.
  5. Add the shredded mozzarella
    • Evenly sprinkle shredded mozzarella on top of the buttered slices.
    • Spread it to the edges for full cheesy coverage.
  6. Layer with provolone cheese
    • Place one slice of provolone on top of each toast. This adds a creamy, melty texture to balance the shredded cheese.
  7. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese
    • Finish with a sprinkle of Parmesan for a savory, salty finish.
  8. Optional: Add protein
    • If using chicken or beef, evenly spoon it over the cheese layers.
    • Make sure it’s well distributed so every bite includes a bit of protein.
  9. Bake the toast
    • Place the tray in the oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
    • Check at 10 minutes to ensure the cheese is fully melted and bubbling.
  10. Optional broiling step
  • For a crispy, golden top, switch to the broil setting for 1-2 minutes at the end.
  • Keep a close eye to avoid burning the cheese.
  1. Cool slightly before serving
  • Remove from oven and let sit for 1-2 minutes to allow the cheese to set.
  • Serve warm for best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Bread matters: The thicker the slice, the better it will hold up to toppings. Day-old bread works great because it crisps nicely.

  • Butter prep: Do not microwave butter to soften it quickly. Leave it on the counter for about 30 minutes before using.

  • Garlic choice: Garlic powder is milder and spreads more evenly, while fresh garlic adds a bolder taste but can be overpowering if used too much.

  • Cheese options: If you don’t have provolone, use cheddar, Monterey Jack, or even Swiss. Just make sure it melts well.

  • Adding meat: Always pre-cook your chicken or beef. Leftover rotisserie chicken works great. Drain beef well to avoid sogginess.

  • Crispier bottom: Place the toast directly on a metal rack for the last few minutes to help the bottom crisp.

  • Leftovers: Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
